Once inside the Ground Floor Corridor, you will pass beneath arches accented by fragrant greenery, pine cones and white lights. The pier tables display pieces from the White House Collection of American Crafts, which was initiated during the 1993 holiday season to honor the Year of the American Craft. For the past several years this collection has traveled to major museums across the country.
The tree in the Library, evokes our 1999 theme of Holiday Treasures at the White House with replicas of historic sites and projects being protected by Save America's Treasures. This public-private partnership, which we initiated between the White House Millennium Council and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is dedicated to rescuing the enduring symbols of American tradition. Dolls representing some of our Nation's most significant historical figures hang alongside these treasures, and vignettes reflecting our 1999 theme adorn the tables and mantel.
The Vermeil Room houses a tree decorated with the serene elegance of handcrafted angels. Seven thousand American craft artists were invited to create angels for the Blue Room tree in 1993, and small vignettes of the ornaments can be found throughout the room.
