Adam B. Jaffe


Adam B. Jaffe is Professor of Economics at Brandeis University, and co-organizer of the Innovation Policy and Economy (IPE) group of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).  Previously, he was Assistant and then Associate Professor of Economics at Harvard University.  During 1992-4 he visited the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

Professor Jaffe's areas of specialization are the economics of technological change, the economic impact of publicly funded research, and the economics of regulated industries.  He has published on various topics including industrial research and development, the economics of basic research and universities, incentive regulation and regulatory reform, and the determinants of the diffusion of new technologies.

During academic year 1990-91, Prof. Jaffe took leave from Harvard to serve as Senior Staff Economist at the President's Council of Economic Advisers in Washington, DC, where he had primary staff responsibility for energy policy, technology policy, and regulatory policy.  Professor Jaffe received his S.B. in Chemistry (1976) and his S.M. in Technology and Policy (1978) from M.I.T., and his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University (1985).  He is a member of the Board of Editors of the American Economic Review, and Associate Editor of the Rand Journal of Economics, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Industrial Economics.
