                              THE WHITE HOUSE

                     STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Today, Members of the House introduced new pipeline safety
legislation. The Administration welcomes the continued interest from these
Members in moving forward with strong, comprehensive pipeline safety
legislation. With the Senate having already passed a pipeline safety bill,
it is imperative that the House bring legislation to the floor as soon as
possible, so that a new pipeline safety law can be enacted before the end
of the year. Working together, we can enact a new law that establishes
better standards for the inspection and maintenance of our Nation?s
pipelines - backed by rigorous enforcement, effective state-federal
partnerships, adequate resources, and the best technology achievable - and
that guarantees every community?s right to know where these pipelines are
and how well they are being operated and maintained.
