 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES PHILIP N. BREDESEN TO THE NATIONAL COMMISSION ON
                     LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

     The President today announced his intent to nominate Philip N.
Bredesen to serve as a member of the National Commission on Libraries and
Information Science.

     Philip N. Bredesen of Nashville, TN, is President of Bredex
Corporation, an educational software company.  Mayor Bredesen served as
Mayor of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County from 1991 until 1999.
Before being elected Mayor, he was a successful businessman, including
being the founder and CEO of HealthAmerica Corporation, an NYSE company.

     Mayor Bredesen received his B.S. from Harvard University.

     The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science is a
permanent, independent agency of the federal government composed of
fourteen members, serving five-year terms, and two ex officio members.
NCLIS is charged by law (P.L. 91-345) to advise the President and Congress
on national and international library and information services policies and
plans.
