PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES HOWARD K. KOH AS A MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL CANCER

The President today announced his intent to appoint Dr. Howard K. Koh
to serve as a member of the National Cancer Advisory Board.

Dr. Howard K. Koh, of Andover, Massachusetts, is the Commissioner of
Public Health in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As Commissioner, he
chairs the Public Health Council and oversees the Massachusetts Department
of Public Health. Previously, he served as Director of Cancer Prevention
and Control at Boston University Medical Center and Professor of
Dermatology, Medicine, and Public Health at Boston University Schools of
Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Koh has served as a cancer control
consultant to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a
member of the editorial board of The Journal of Clinical Oncology, and as
principal investigator for numerous medical research grants funded by the
National Cancer Institute and the CDC. Dr. Koh has authored more than 200
articles in the areas of cancer prevention, tobacco control, Asian-American
health issues and skin oncology. In 1999, he was the recipient of the
national Distinguished Service Award from the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Koh attended Yale College and the Yale University School of
Medicine and has a Masters of Public Health from the Boston University
School of Public Health. Dr. Koh is one of only a few physicians in the
United States to hold board certifications in four medical fields (internal
medicine, hematology, medical oncology, and dermatology) as well as a
public health degree.

The members of the National Cancer Advisory Board provide advice to
the President, the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human
Services, and the Director of the National Cancer Institute, with respect
to the activities and policies carried out by the Institute. The Board
consists of eighteen members appointed by the President for six year terms.
