                     STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

President Clinton will visit the United Kingdom and Ireland December
12-14, 2000. The visit responds to invitations from Prime Minister Blair,
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Northern Ireland First Minister David Trimble
and Deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon. Building on the progress that has
been achieved in implementing the Good Friday Accord, the President hopes
that his visit will help the parties and the governments to overcome
current difficulties on the path to lasting peace in Northern Ireland.
