PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES ALAN SCHECHTER TO THE
J. WILLIAM FULBRIGHT FOREIGN SCHOLARSHIP BOARD
The President today announced his intention to re-appoint Alan H.
Schechter as a member of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship
Board.
Dr. Alan H. Schechter, of Wellesley, Massachusetts, is Professor of
Political Science at Wellesley College. A former Fulbright Scholar
himself, Dr. Schechter currently serves as Chair of the Fulbright Foreign
Scholarship Board. For the past 39 years, he has taught at Wellesley
College, serving as an Instructor from 1962 to 1964; an Assistant Professor
from 1964 to 1970; an Associate Professor from 1970 to 1976; and as a
Professor from 1976 to the present. From 1970 to 1976 and from 1979 to
1982, Dr. Schechter served as Chairman of the Department of Political
Science, and was Acting Chairman of the American Studies Program in 1990.
He has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including a
Fulbright Scholarship and a Ford Foundation Fellowship, and is the author
of two books and many articles and research reports.
Dr. Schechter received a B.A. from Amherst College in 1957, studied at
Yale Law School and the University of Leiden, in the Netherlands, and
received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1965.
The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board has responsibility
for the selection of participants in the Fulbright educational exchange
programs. The Board also oversees the policies of the Fulbright program.
In any given year, more than 6,000 students, scholars, teachers, and
trainees are awarded new or renewed grants under the program. The
Fulbright Program, which is administered through the Department of State,
finances studies, research, and other educational activities for American
citizens and nationals abroad and for citizens and nationals of foreign
countries in American universities. The Fulbright Program also promotes
American studies in foreign countries, foreign language training and area
studies in the United States and abroad.
