PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES SEYMOUR MARTIN LIPSET AS A MEMBER OF THE UNITED
STATES INSTITUTE OF PEACE
President Clinton today announced his intent to nominate Seymour
Martin Lipset as a member of the United States Institute of Peace.
Mr. Seymour Martin Lipset, of Arlington, Virginia, is a Hazel
Professor of Public Policy for the Institute of Public Policy at George
Mason University. He is also a Senior Scholar at the Progressive Policy
Institute and the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars. From
1975 to 1990, Mr. Lipset served as the Caroline S. G. Muno Professor of
Political Science and Sociology at Stanford University. He is a former
President of the American Professors for Peace in the Middle East and
former Co-Chair of the Executive Committee of the International Center for
Peace in the Middle East.
Mr. Lipset received a B.A. degree from the City College of New York
and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
The United States Institute of Peace is a bi-partisan board
established in 1948 by an Act of Congress to promote international peace
and the resolution of international conflict without violence through
education, training, research, and public information. The Institute has a
staff of 47 and an annual budget of approximately $11 million.
