PRESIDENT NAMES PETER F. ROMERO ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR WESTERN HEMISPHERE
AFFAIRS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE
President Clinton today announced the recess appointment of Peter F.
Romero as Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs. Mr.
Romero was nominated to the Senate on September 9, 1998.
Mr. Peter F. Romero, of Hollywood, Florida, joined the Foreign Service
in 1977 and is now a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of
Minister-Counselor. He is currently serving as Principal Deputy Assistant
Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs. Mr. Romero has previously
served as U.S. Ambassador to Ecuador. During his 22-year foreign service
career, he has been posted to Santo Domingo, Naples, Rome, and San
Salvador.
Mr. Romero received his B.A. and M.A. from Florida State University.
The Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, as directed by the Assistant
Secretary, is responsible for the general conduct of U.S. foreign relations
with the countries within Central and South America, Mexico, Canada and the
Caribbean. The Assistant Secretary assists the Secretary of State in
providing overall direction, coordination, and supervision of
interdepartmental activities of the U.S. government in the countries noted
above. This includes ensuring the adequacy of U.S. policy in these regions
and of the plans, programs, resources and performance for implementing that
policy.
