Today, President Clinton visits Sao Paulo and Rio de Jenairo, Brazil, before leaving for Buenos Aires, Argentina. While in Sao Paulo, President Clinton speaks to Brazilian business leaders about the importance of open markets in the new global economy. Later, in Rio de Janeiro, President Clinton addresses members of the Mangueira School community and talks about the importance of education as a tool for economic development. The President and First Lady end their day by traveling to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they participate in an arrival ceremony at Ezeiza Airport.

Following an introduction by the President of the Sao Paulo American Chamber of Commerce President Clinton will offer remarks that are expected to address the importance of open markets and their capacity to increase hemispheric economic growth in the new global economy. The President is also expected to cite the vital importance of a strong educational system to give our citizens the tools they need to succeed in a global economy.

Sao Paulo is often cited as the "economic engine" of Brazil and the commercial heart of Latin America. In 1996, two-way trade between the U.S. and Brazil totaled more than $21 billion and U.S. exports to Brazil have more than doubled since 1992. The United States is the largest foreign investor in Brazil.

Among the audience will be members of the American Chamber of Commerce as well as representatives of schools that are sponsored by Chamber of Commerce member companies. The Sao Paulo American Chamber has an ambitious program for increasing corporate sponsorship of public schools.

After greeting guests at the Memorial American Latine, President Clinton will join Mrs. Clinton for travel to Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Mangueira School

Following his arrival in Rio de Janiero, The President will visit the Mangueira School to address several thousand members of the Mangueira community -- students, teachers, and their families -- in the school's soccer field. (October 15 is Teacher's Day in Brazil.)

In his remarks, President Clinton is expected to explain how education is our most powerful weapon against poverty as well as the key to opportunity for the disadvantaged.

Later in the afternoon, following The President's visit to the Mangueira School, President and Mrs. Clinton will depart Rio de Janeiro for the flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
