The East Room of the 1900

The stars and stripes deck the East Room for the Army and Navy Reception of 1900, when their Commander in Chief received high-ranking military officers at this annual White House event. Two years later the opulent Victorian decor gave way to Colonial revival. Today Gilbert Stuart's portrait of Washington, to the left of the fireplace, hangs again in the room.
