Science Advisor Releases Mid-Summer Status Report on R&D Appropriations
Neal Lane, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, today released a report on the current status of the FY2001 R&D appropriations.
In a letter accompanying the report to leaders in the U.S. science and engineering community, Lane noted that "unfortunately, Congress has currently stalled our progress toward our shared national goals and toward balance in a healthy R&D portfolio precisely at the moment in history when we can best afford to invest in America's future." Congressional action to date has left a $1.8 billion deficit to the President's historic R&D request. Lane urged that the report's numbers and implications for America's science and engineering enterprise be shared as widely as possible.
On July 28th, numerous leaders in the U.S. science and engineering community joined Neal Lane at a White House R&D budget briefing with John Podesta, the President's Chief of Staff, Jack Lew, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and David Beier, the Vice President's Chief Domestic Policy Advisor.
