Shirley Malcom Introduction

The next speaker is Shirley Malcom, a zoologist who received her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University, and studied at UCLA and the University of Washington. She is currently the head of the Directorate for Education and Human Resources Programs of the AAAS, where she has oversight of education activities for under-represented groups and public understanding of science and technology.

Dr. Malcom was head of the AAAS Office of Opportunities in Science from 1979 to 1989. She is very busy at the present time, recently appointed by President Clinton and confirmed by the Senate as a member of the National Science Board, and named to the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology. She serves on a number of boards, including the American Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Corporation, and the National Center on Education and the Economy. Shirley will speak to us today on education aspects of development.
