Special Assistant to
the President and Senior Director


The Office advises and assists the President and the National Security Advisor on all aspects of U.S. foreign policy toward countries of Western and Central Europe, the Baltics, Canada, NATO, OSCE, the EU, and other European regional organizations.

Among the issues that the office provides advice and assistance to the President on are: the evolution of transatlantic relations; the enlargement and development of NATO; closer political, security and economic cooperation between the United States and the European Union; integration of Central and eastern European countries, including the Baltics, into European and Transatlantic structures and organizations; supporting the peace process in Northern Ireland; supporting the Northern European Initiative and other efforts to anchor the Baltic states and their neighbors in European and transatlantic organizations; promoting a negotiated settlement on Cyprus and strengthening relations between Greece and Turkey; promoting, through governmental and nongovernmental initiatives, tolerance and pluralism in government, and recognition of human rights in Europe and, with European allies, through out the world; and the conducting of bilateral relations with the close friends and allies of the United States in Europe.
