|
Background | Program Operations | Outcomes |
In 1993, the Native American Task Force, a parental advisory committee for the Churchill County School District, voted that students should have a day in which they learn about the culture, art and traditions of the local Paiute Shoshone Tribe. The objective of the Native American Day is to educate children within the school district about the Native American culture. The task force believes that children will gain a closer understanding of Native American heritage and build closer relationships with community members by participating in the day's events. Moreover, the program actively encourages parental involvement in school-related activities.
The Native American Day celebration is an all-day event that takes place at a local park in the county. The Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribe, in cooperation with Churchill County School District, organizes the event. The planning committee invite Paiute Tribal members to set up booths displaying their art work, pottery, clothing and literature. In 1997, presentations and exhibits included Navajo rug weaving, cradle boards, Fry bread, willow basket weaving and dancing. There are a series of performances throughout the day that culminates with all children dancing with the Sage Spirit Dancers, an ensemble that performs Native American dances.
Outcomes and Significant Accomplishments
Approximately 2,500 students have participated in the program throughout the last five years. In 1997, three different sessions held throughout the day accommodated 900 students in the local park. The students' interests in this subject matter are further developed with classroom activities that complement the Native American celebration.
