Office of the Vice President
STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE Today we take another important step toward ensuring that all Americans breath clean and healthy air. Our country's work on this issue is something that we can truly be proud of. Beginning with the enactment of the Clean Air Act on a bipartisan basis over 20 years ago, we have demonstrated that if we work together on this goal we can achieve it. Our Administration has made continuing this work one of our highest priorities. We have issued tough new protections against soot and smog and, just last week on Earth Day, protections for the air in our national parks and wilderness. Today the President will announce another critical component of this effort -- proposed rules that will clean up vehicles and fuels. When these rules are fully implemented vehicles will be between 77% and 95% cleaner than those currently on the road, and the amount of sulfur in gasoline will be one-tenth of what it is today. These cleaner vehicles and fuels will provide Americans with the transportation choices they want and the clean air they need. These proposed rules have been written by working closely with public health experts, auto companies, oil companies, state and local officials and environmental groups. They reflect the good ideas of all of these groups, and are being published today for further public comment. All of us share the same goal -- clean air for all our citizens, and the ability to manufacture and use products that are respectful of the environment. Working together, I am confident that we can achieve that goal.
