                      STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

I urge the United States Congress to enact key legislation that is
designed to restore America's Everglades.

The Congress should not pass up an historic opportunity to save one of
this country?s greatest natural treasures. The measure at stake is the
product of an enormous, bipartisan effort to accomplish one of the greatest
environmental restoration efforts in our history. It enjoys the support of
the entire range of affected interests, from developers and farmers to
environmentalists, from federal and state agencies to local government.

The restoration of the Everglades should not wait another year. The
time to act is now. I call upon the leadership of the House of
Representatives and the Senate to work in a prompt and bipartisan fashion
to make the dream of a restored Everglades a reality.
