STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY
As the President made clear today, the majority in Congress put
forward a partisan legislative tax proposal that fails to address our
concerns on school construction, health care and pension coverage that
would affect millions of middle class Americans. If H.R. 2614 reaches his
desk, he will be forced to veto it. However, the President believes we can
work together in a bipartisan process to find common ground on tax relief
-- and that we must raise the minimum wage.
Moreover, the President considers Medicare and Medicaid beneficiary
coverage and provider payment improvements to be must-pass legislation in
the 106th Congress. Although the excessive payment increases to HMO?s in
this bill are unacceptable, the President looks forward to signing a fair
and balanced proposal before Congress adjourns sine die -- one that makes
the necessary investments in beneficiaries and vulnerable health care
providers.
