PRESIDENT CLINTON NOMINATES S. ELIZABETH GIBSON
TO THE FEDERAL BENCH
The President today nominated S. Elizabeth Gibson to the U.S. Court of
Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
S. Elizabeth Gibson, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, has been a
professor at the University of North Carolina School of Law since 1983.
Gibson began her career in academia as an Associate Professor of Law at UNC
School of Law in 1983, then became a Professor of Law in 1988, and has
served as a Burton Craige Professor of Law since 1993. Gibson has also
served as a consultant for the Federal Judicial Center since 1998.
Gibson began her legal career as a law clerk for Judge J. Braxton
Craven, Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit
(1976-1977), and then for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Byron R. White
(1977-1978). After her Supreme Court clerkship, Gibson entered private
practice as an associate at Shea & Gardner in Washington, D.C. (1978-1983),
where she became a partner in 1983. Gibson received her B.A. degree, cum
laude, from Duke University in 1972 and her J.D. degree with high honors
from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1976.
