                         NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER
                             SAMUEL R. BERGER

I was saddened to learn of the death of John Lindsay. I had the
privilege of working for him briefly when he was Mayor of New York and I
have been a strong admirer of his since. He was a man of high principle,
strong integrity and passionate commitment to his city and country. He was
a fine public servant and a very good man.
