William Kloss was educated at Oberlin College and the University of Michigan, and was a Fulbright scholar in Rome. A noted lecturer on art, he is author of /Treasures from the National Museum of American Art and Samuel F.B. Morse, and was the major contributor to Treasures of State. In 1990 he was appointed by President George Bush to the Committee for the Preservation of the White House.

Doreen Bolger, curator of paintings and sculpture at the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas, received her Ph.D. from The City University of New York. The author of numerous books, articles, and essays on American art, she was previously curator of American paintings and sculpture and manager of The Henry R. Luce Center for the Study of American Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

David Park Curry, who holds a Ph.D. from Yale University, is associate director for research and collections at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where he is also curator of American art. Dr. Curry has published widely on late 19th- and early 20th-century American painting, architecture, and decorative arts. He has served as curator of American art at the Denver Art Museum and the Freer Gallery of Art.

John Wilmerding is the Sarofim professor of American art at Princeton University and the author of more than a dozen books on American art. Currently the president of Shelburne Museum in Vermont, he also serves on the board of trustees for Monticello and for the Wendell Gilley Museum in Maine. In 1990 he was appointed by President George Bush to the Committee for the Preservation of the White House.

Betty C. Monkman is associate curator of the White House collection of fine and decorative arts and has made the White House her specialty in writing and study. She received her Master of Arts degree from The George Washington University.
