THE WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCES SEMI-FINALISTS
FOR 2000-2001 WHITE HOUSEFELLOWSHIPS

Ninety-three outstanding men and women have advanced to the second round of competition for a White House Fellowship, America’s most prestigious fellowship for leadership and public service. The semi-finalists include an astronaut, a space physicist and an aerospace engineer; six school teachers and a principal; three dot-com executives; a theater manager and, for the first time, brothers – both majors in the U.S. Army.

White House Fellows spend a year serving the President as full-time paid special assistants to members of the Cabinet and senior White House staff. The more than 500 alumni of the program have gone on to become leaders in all fields of endeavor, fulfilling the fellowship’s mission to encourage active citizenship and service to the nation. Previous Fellows include: Colin L. Powell, Chairman of America’s Promise and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian; Tom Johnson, CEO of CNN; Gen. Wesley K. Clark, Supreme Allied Commander, Europe; Jane Cahill Pfeiffer, former Chairman, NBC; and Tim Wirth, President of the United Nations Foundation, and former Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs.

During April, panels of prominent citizens in Washington, New York City, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles will interview the semi-finalists and select up to 30 National Finalists who will be interviewed June 1-4 by the 34-member President’s Commission on White House Fellowships. The Commission will then recommend 11-19 names to President Clinton for appointment as White House Fellows. The fellowship year begins September 1, 2000. Fellows will remain in their government jobs despite the change in administrations that will occur in January, 2001, as they have done through the six presidential transitions that have occurred since this strictly non-partisan program was started.

The White House Fellows program, established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, provides an opportunity for outstanding Americans to spend a year working with leaders in the federal government. The Fellows also participate in an education program that includes off-the-record meetings with high-ranking government officials, scholars, journalists and private-sector leaders. White House Fellows are expected to have a record of remarkable achievement early in their careers, the skills required to serve at the highest levels of government, the potential to be leaders in their professions, and a proven commitment to public service.

This year’s semi-finalists come from 23 states, as well as the District of Columbia, and from as far away as Japan, Switzerland and The Netherlands. Their average age is 33 and 38% are women. A complete list of the semi-finalists is appended below.

To obtain an application for the 2001-2002 program, please write to the White House Fellows Program, 712 Jackson Place, NW, Washington, DC 20503, or visit the web site at www.whitehousefellows.gov. Only U.S. citizens may apply, and employees of the federal government are not eligible except if they are career military personnel. The application deadline will be February 1, 2001.
