NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL
HISTORICAL LIST OF NSC MEETINGS WITH AGENDA TOPICS

As a public service, the National Security Council is making a historical list available of National Security Council meetings from the Truman through the Bush administrations. This supplements the Historical List of Policy Documents previously made available. Chronological lists of the NSC meetings are organized into separate series by presidential administration, with agenda topics indicated for each meeting.

Meetings of the National Security Council involve the formulation and discussion of national security policies and issues at the highest level of the United States Government. Agenda topics provide insight into the major concerns and issues of each presidential administration.

The meetings listed here involved the NSC's statutory members, i.e., the President, Vice President, and the Secretaries of State and Defense. Please note, however, that presidential administrations from Nixon through Bush also utilized other interdepartmental working groups or committees to facilitate the work of the NSC. Such groups as the Washington Special Action Group in the Nixon and Ford administrations, the Policy Review Committee in the Carter administration, the National Security Policy Group in the Reagan administration, and the NSC Principals Committee in the Bush administration also met periodically.

The frequency and format of NSC meetings varied for each administration. Nonetheless, for each administration the date and agenda topics of each meeting are included. For a few meetings, some of the agenda topics remain classified and are omitted. In one meeting during the Bush administration, the entire agenda remains classified and has a "Classified Subject" reference.

Copies of documents relating to the meetings, including agendas, briefing papers, and minutes for most meetings, may be requested by contacting the respective presidential libraries or the National Archives and Records Administration. Presidential library email addresses:
