The Office of Environmental Affairs advises and assists the President and National Security Advisor on all aspects of U.S. foreign policy with respect to protecting the global environment.

Among the issues on which the Office provides advise and assistance to the President and National Security Advisor are global climate change, ozone depletion, biodiversity, forests, desertification, oceans, trade/environment, chemicals, policies with respect to the United Nations and multilateral development banks and conflict or instability caused or exacerbated by environmental degradation.
