Since 1993, the DPC has helped develop and advance the Clinton-Gore Administration's domestic agenda on a host of issues: health care, education, crime, consumer protection, children and families, tobacco, and welfare reform. Over the past seven years, the DPC mission has included enacting the Brady bill, the assault weapons ban, and the President's program to fund 100,000 community police officers; the 1996 welfare reform law; the Administration's plan to expand children's health insurance; the Family and Medical Leave Act; the President's class size reduction plan and other efforts to invest more in schools and demand more from them; and numerous other initiatives. The DPC also has worked on a number of executive actions, ranging from consumer protection to gun safety to child support enforcement.
Currently, the DPC is working to provide an affordable Medicare prescription drug benefit for all beneficiaries; enact a strong, enforceable Patients' Bill of Rights; pass common-sense legislation to close the gun show loophole; improve teacher quality, expand pre-school and after-school, turn around low-performing schools, and help communities with school modernization and renovation; promote responsible fatherhood; and help families succeed at work and at home.
