T A S K F O R C E

The concerns of sustainable development--land use, ecosystems, transportation, public safety, affordable housing--spread beyond the arbitrary lines of political jurisdiction. The mission of the Metropolitan and Rural Strategies Task Force was to encourage and support local and regional collaboration among Federal, State, and local government agencies; public interest and community groups; and businesses to advance sustainable development in metropolitan and rural communities.

CO-CHAIRS:
Scott Bernstein, President of the Center for Neighborhood Technology in Chicago, IL;
Andrew Cuomo, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Susan Savage, Mayor of Tulsa, Oklahoma;

MEMBERS:
The task force includes Federal and local government, businesses, community and environmental groups, as well as individuals representing grassroots community interests.

TASK FORCE COORDINATOR:
Cheryl Little

GOALS:

promote supportive policies that provide incentives and dismantle disincentives and barriers to institutional cooperation on sustainable community development in metropolitan and rural areas;
advance a holistic vision of sustainable community development
develop national and community frameworks of indicators and metrics to evaluate progress on sustainable community development.

WORKING GROUPS:
The task force had four working groups:

Economic Opportunities Working Group;
Working Group on Multi-jurisdictional and Regional Collaboration;
Rural Strategies Working Group; and
Benchmarking and Evaluating Progress Working Group.

In addition, the task force collaborated on projects with the three other PCSD task forces on climate change, environmental management, and international development.

PUBLICATIONS:
The task force built on PCSD's history of substantive work on sustainable communities, reflected in Chapter 4 of Sustainable America (March 1996), Building on Consensus: A Progress Report on Sustainable America (January 1997), and the Sustainable Communities Task Force Report (December 1997).
