Mementos of the sixty year history of Texaco's support for the Metropolitan Opera including recordings of the first and last broadcasts of the century from 1940 and 1999
"One of the interesting aspects of the ‘American Century' is the uniquely
American tradition of support for the fine arts among private individuals,
foundations and corporations. The generosity of the private sector has allowed the development of world-class artistic institutions and 'democratization' of appreciation for the arts. In keeping with this important facet of our American heritage, we suggest that the National Time Capsule contain a recording of the final Texaco/Metropolitan Opera broadcast of the 20th century. This broadcast [was] scheduled for Dec. 25th and feature[d] ‘Le Nozze Di Figaro' by Mozart, a true classic first performed in May of 1786. We note that Texaco is currently celebrating our 60th year as a sponsor of these broadcast--one of the longest continuous sponsorships in U.S. broadcast history."
