"The item from my field of work that best captures America at the end of
the 20th century is the state-of-the-art digital integrated circuit. It
represents the best of the past and the hope of the future. It is an outgrowth of perhaps the greatest invention of the last millennium, the transistor. Two artifacts, a model of the first transistor and a model of the latest digital integrated circuit, as a pair, best illustrate the enormous power of the genius of humankind. The transistor ushered in the Information Age. It has transformed our way of life, and positioned us for a glorious future. It is an instrument of peace and prosperity."
